What is a Labyrinth? A Labyrinth is a winding path that is walk-able, and following it takes is to the center and back out again. It is not a maze, and has not dead ends or tricks, but rather is one continuous journey to the center and back out again.
It is an ancient pattern that leads to healing, self-knowledge, and finding purpose in our lives. There are many different forms of labyrinths. Some are permanent out door or in door labyrinths; such as in a carpet or cement pattern. Many labyrinths are found painted on a portable canvas.
THREE STAGES:
There are three stages to the labyrinth walk:
- The journey "in to the center" symbolizes "letting go" of all our limitations and barriers in our life.
- The "center" symbolizes going to the center of our self or the center of our universe where we get in touch with "illumination" or "enlightenment" about our problems, experiences, or our life as a whole.
- The journey "from the center back out again" is where we bring our illumination, our wisdom, our gifts back out to the world.
WHY WALK A LABYRINTH?
The walking of a Labyrinth is similar to a walking meditation. Some experiences from walking a labyrinth include:
- feeling calmer and more relaxed
- finding "answers" to life challenges
- feeling more balanced and centered
- Finding guidance to keep going through loss, trauma or challenges
- resolution of conflict in relationship: respect for a differing opinion
- Guidance about career changes
- Remembering the essence of oneself as separate from an illness that has been diagnosed.
- Awareness about the need to balance giving and receiving.
- AND MUCH MUCH MORE!!!
There are as many gifts given by the Labyrinth as there are people who walk. Every walk is a metaphor for our life journey and whatever comes up is a way of shining a light on something we can or may want to pay attention to.
WHERE ARE LABYRINTHS FOUND?
The Labyrinths are over 3500 years old. A labyrinth built in France in the 1200's A.D. still exists today in the floor of a cathedral.
Labyrinths are making a resurgence and can be found in just about every country. They are found in parks, hospitals, prisons, hospice programs and retreat centers. Many private land owners have made labyrinths in many sizes and forms on their property.
ALSO, a quilted lap labyrinth or a finger labyrinth is available, for those that cannot walk.
